What does a COVID headache feel like?

A COVID headache can vary in intensity and characteristics, but many individuals describe it as distinct from typical headaches. Firstly, it's important to note that not everyone with COVID-19 experiences headaches. For those who do, the headache often presents as a persistent and throbbing pain, typically felt at the front or top of the head. Some people describe it as a pressure or tightness. Unlike regular headaches, COVID-related headaches may not respond well to over-the-counter pain relievers, adding to the discomfort.

In addition to the location and type of pain, COVID headaches can be accompanied by other symptoms commonly associated with the virus. Many individuals report experiencing fever, body aches, and fatigue concurrently with the headache, creating an overall sense of malaise. The headache can also be associated with sinus congestion or a feeling of heaviness in the head. It's essential to recognize that these symptoms can vary widely among individuals, and not everyone with COVID-19 will experience the same combination or intensity of symptoms.

Furthermore, the duration of a COVID headache can also differ. While some individuals may have short-lived headaches that resolve relatively quickly, others may experience prolonged or recurring headaches throughout the course of the illness. Monitoring for other symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, loss of taste or smell, and persistent cough, is crucial in distinguishing a COVID-related headache from other causes. If someone suspects they have COVID-19, especially if they have a headache along with other symptoms, seeking medical advice and getting tested is recommended for proper evaluation and guidance.
